The House of Lords, apparently ‘reformed’, continues to demonstrate that ‘the new elite has developed the self-regard and advanced sense of entitlement of the old aristocracy without the intervening centuries of uneven service and sporadic self-sacrifice’ [from the epilogue of Splendour & Squalor]:
